Into the woods: how one man survived alone in the wilderness for 27 years

Interesting read, however not quite the inspirational story I expected from the title. Was looking to read about amazing survival skills and true loneliness. Also I wouldn't really say he was alone if he spent quite a lot of his time stalking people! Just because he didn't interact with them directly does not make him alone Also same goes for the "survived" part - that word makes me expect he use survival skills not master thievery...

I finally got around to sorting out the flowers in the planters in front of the house. I love having a garden, but a green thumb I am not. Not yet at least... It was also an excuse for little Zack to try out his pushchair (he's still in the bassinet when we go out) so he could see the garden while I planted the flowers.

BBQ with friends and family.

On co-sleeping. Personally I'm quite frustrated with all the anti-co-sleeping materials everywhere. It is natural. And while I get it, it's easier to just say "don't do it" than explain all the nuances (though most are pretty common sense - don't drink, or take drugs, don't have pillows or blankets over the baby, etc.), it still bugs me that sometimes even the mention of co-sleeping will get comments as if you were dangling your baby off an edge of a cliff...

I was quite annoyed a while ago, when there was an article against co-sleeping from a mother who's baby had died. The article started by listing how she followed all the co-sleeping guidelines, and then ended up explaining how the child died when she fell asleep with it on the sofa (or an armchair, can't remember now). Which is a tragedy, but not really a co-sleeping issue! Yet, the sensational headlines would like you to think that was the case.

It's quite depressing how powerless against our own biases. I guess the comic sums it up well, the best we can do is try and question everything we take for granted.

More bad news for civilisation. It does make me sometimes feel like we're living a Game of Thrones like scenario... Brexit, Trump, climate-change deniers, all the petty squabbles of the politicians more interested in their own self interest than the betterment of society, all the while the Earth is deteriorating. Whether they believe this is man made or not, how people can still ignore the fact things are changing and refuse to do something about it and invest in our children's future.

Important - Theresa May and the Internet. There has been a lot said about various manifesto statements recently but sometimes the most important things slip through the cracks. Personally I was quite appalled there isn't more talk about this.

It makes me angry, because the old, non-techy people in politics either don't understand the implications of their actions or even worse they actually DO! Sure, encourage platforms to help deal with bullying, but at the end of the day, if an individual behaves in a way that harms other it should be treated BY THE POLICE like any other crime. So maybe we should train and empower our law enforcement to help deal with bullying as well as educate children.

And as for the censorship. Are we turning into China? Why should the government decide if and what porn can I watch? Again, if it's illegal, then there are laws that should deal with it, not some politicians.

US and childbirth deaths. Long article, but a sobering read. Nice to see the positive developments in the UK. And from personal experience I do have to say that everyone was very aware about pre-eclampsia and there were a lot of checks and education for the mothers as well.

Finding Lisa. Quite a mystery solved with the help of crowd sourcing and perseverance.

My Family's Slave. This has been quite controversial recently, still, an interesting read (or listen - there's an audio version available on the page).

We need to talk about Diane Abbott. A very interesting read. And much needed one too. I do find it disgusting how often these days people forget that they are dealing with human beings not some fairy tale monsters. Would you hurl these insults to someone's face? (Yes, there are some that would, which is even more horrifying.) There's disagreeing with someone's views, there's laughing at the gaffes made, there's satire and critique, but there shouldn't be place for insults and abuse.

"City Trees". There is a question whether this is worth the money and we should spend more on tackling the source of the pollution. Personally I think it's a bit like with the electric cars. Sure, the electricity we use to power them is often coming from old-fashioned energy sources. However eventually the source will be more sustainable too, and to use that to hold off from more eco-friendly cars is false logic. Same for these trees, sure they are not solving the root of the problem, but are a nice interim solution - they look nice and provide a good service.
